"Goodbye, Daddy"

For as long as Gavin has been able to walk and stand at our front door, he has insisted on waving goodbye to whichever parent is leaving the house without him. He does this with house guests too.

This morning Casey had to leave earlier than usual. Sleepy-eyed and still in his pajama bottoms, Gavin got out of bed just to be sure he didn't miss his daily goodbye ritual of waving to his father.

I'll miss this little guy when he's all up and grown.

Prelude to Halloween festivities

This year I added a door wreath to our Halloween decor. Sawyer enjoyed helping me shop for supplies at Hobby Lobby.

Gavin and I carved our pumpkin a few days before Halloween. He's getting more independent and I allowed him to use his pocket knife for some of the carving, at his request and with supervision.

Sawyer spent time with me outside this morning. He ate dirt while I watered the garden and decorated the front porch.

The day before Halloween Sawyer had a Halloween themed play date with his baby buddies. The babies came dressed in their Halloween outfits. Sawyer's Nana Kathy found him a monster onesie with cute Boo bottoms.

Texas Book Festival

When we moved to TN it took us a while to find our favorite places and events for our Family Fun adventures and activities.

We fell in love with Market Square for its farmers market and Christmas Parade and live music venues and restaurants. Elkmont campgrounds in the GSMNP was always a special treat. The annual events at the UTIA gardens and farms made happy family memories.

As much as I missed home and hoped that one day we could move back, I knew I would miss these places and all that East TN had to offer, including our family!

Since moving back to TX and settling in Austin, we've slowly explored the city and surrounding area and made new memories and found new favorite places and spaces.

The park and patio at Central Market is always great for the whole family. There's live music on Fridays and access to the store and cafe keeps us fed and hydrated. Twice now we've been to the annual Dia de Los muertos parade and plan to go again this year.

I recently took both boys to the TX Book Festival on the Capitol grounds. It was a spur of the moment decision that worked out well. This is one festival that is right up our alley and there's fun for the entire family. For our first visit we stayed close to the children's tents, where we listened to stories and live music, did some arts and crafts, met Clifford The Big Red Dog, and searched for Waldo.

With proper planning I'm hoping to experience some of the activities in the adult areas, for example hear a few of the great bands in the music tent and stop by the Central Market tent where chefs demonstrate how to prepare meals from their cookbooks.

Being on the Capitol grounds had its perks! We enjoyed a snack and playtime in the shade of a big old Pecan tree. Afterward, we explored the halls and rotunda of our beautiful Capitol building.

It was a great day with my boys.

Palo Duro Canyon Trail Run 2014

A couple of weekends ago my mom, Sawyer, and I ventured into Palo Duro Canyon, where I competed in a 20K trail run. Not my best performance, but still a positive experience. It was nice to spend time with my friends the Parkers and more importantly share something I love - outdoor adventures and running - with my mom and No.2 son.

It was a great weekend. My ankle is still giving me trouble, but I'm looking forward to more races in 2015.

Fall Carnival

Yesterday was Gavin's annual Fall Carnival at school. I took both the boys. It had already been a long day, unfortunately I wasn't able to get the photos I had wanted. My hands were full with both boys, but it was a fun event and I'm looking forward to next year.

Sawyer and Gavin

Sawyer Dean, 8.5 months

His third tooth is erupting, it's one of his top teeth. He crawls on all fours now, but still army crawls when he is tired.

He pulls up on everything. We recently rearranged our living room. He now has a dedicated 'play room' area. And we have a new cozy TV viewing area.

Gavin's Kinder picture day is tomorrow. Another milestone. His first field trip is at the end of the month. His class is visiting a farm, where they will enjoy fall activities. I'm considering finding a babysitter for Sawyer so that I can go with Gavin. Unfortunately, his school does not allow siblings at parent volunteer events.

Gavin is learning about his five senses at school. He enjoys sharing all his new knowledge with us.
