Train ride!

Well, we finally found a nearby train that kind of compares to the Brackenridge Zoo Train in San Antonio. Both boys really enjoyed the Williamson County Southwest Regional Park Train. The whole park was great, really. There was a huge quarry splash pad with water cannons and rock climbing walls. A large trail system and many ball parks. The train ride ended in a small train park. The ride itself included music, stories, a tunnel, and lots of wildlife. It went much faster than the Zilker Zephyr. We highly recommend the WCSRP to our friends and visitors.

The Alamo

Earlier in the month, Camp Tiff hosted a field trip to the Alamo and the Doseum. The Alamo was a little underwhelming. Too much reading for new readers. But they all enjoyed travelling to San Antonio and the new children's museum.

River Date

Casey and I went on a River date today. I am grateful for our time together. It was a perfect day. I learned new things. I challenged my fears. The water was cool and flowing well. The weather was phenomenal. We had blue skies the entire run. On the way home the sky darkened and a summer thunderstorm rolled through.

Gavin's Photography

Gavin's been curious about photography lately and I love that he calls it my 'work.' He respects the time I set aside to work on it and he likes to ask me questions. Same as with painting and creative writing, I try to encourage any artistic inclinations and curiosities he and Sawyer may have. He hasn't asked to use my big camera yet, but from time to time he asks to take photos with my iPhone.

Gavin's Work:

Conversations With My Son

I recently registered for a 10K trail run. On the night of my first training run I asked Gavin if he wanted to go with me.

"Yeah, I want to go. Wait, do I still need to take a bath if I go?"

"Yes."

"Ok, can I run without a shirt then?"

"Um ok. Sure."

As we're running down our street toward the stop sign at the bottom of the hill he says, "um mom, can you maybe go a little faster?"

"No I cannot. I'm out of shape and I am pacing myself.

"What's 'pacing?'"

"Pacing is..."

"Wait mom, don't tell me. I already know. It's like when you save energy so that you can run a longer time. Right?"

"Yes, exactly."

"See mom, you didn't even have to tell me, because I already knew."

He does this a lot lately, won't let me answer his questions so he can tell me the answer. I sure do love how his little mind is working.

Our Giving Tree

The month of May was wet. Very, very wet. There were a handful of days without rain, but even those days were so humid and moist that nothing dried. The Mosquitos were awful. Gavin lost many days of outside recess. Our backyard was ridiculously muddy. A real swamp at times. It was hard on everyone, but no one in our family felt it more than our beloved shade tree. Our tree from which our boys would swing, our tree that shaded the entire yard, our tree that gave our master bed and bath privacy, our climbing tree that Casey thoughtfully nailed steps to so our boys and friends could independently reach her cradle.

Despite knowing that our tree was approaching the end of her life cycle, Casey still made plans. He planned a treetop perch that would connect to the fort. We pondered a zip line.

We loved our tree, but feared her at the same time, for her biggest limbs hung over our roof.

During one of the particularly nasty tornado producing storms, we heard strong winds and a snap that sent all of us to Gavin and Sawyer's bathtub. As the storm passed, we looked out the back door and knew she had been fatally injured. Our swinging branch had been amputated, leaving the remaining tree limbs in a precarious state with more storms forecasted.

The next day, between storms, Casey and Gavin went to work sawing branches and clearing brush. About a week later what was left of our Giving Tree was cut down to a low sad stump, leaving our backyard scarred and very very sunny.

First Big Boy Haircut

Sawyer was getting a little shaggy. As much as I adored his shaggy style, his bangs were constantly in his eyes and it bothered him.

I tried trimming them recently, but his hair is so straight and my cuts just weren't precise enough. Casey gave him a real barber shop style scissor cut and I think it looks great, though I'll miss his baby boy shag.

Kindergarten Graduation

The week before Gavin's last day of school, he had his Kinder graduation ceremony and celebration. The ceremony was in the cafeteria and then the awards were given in his classroom. He was given awards for being "most competitive" and for his reading ability. We are just so proud of his accomplishments. It was a great event and I don't think I could have gotten any photos without the presence of Nana Cathy. Sawyer was quite the rascal and required someone's full attention at all times. The first full week of summer vacation started today. We have a full house and lots of summertime activities and field trips planned.
