Banana Baby

Well, here We are, at the end of two months and heading into the third month (i.e. the end of the first trimester). The parasite in my uterus is looking ever more human. Organogenisis has commenced. In fact, all Her organs are almost completely developed.

My body is reacting as it should, at least according to The Books. My appetite is growing. I salivate more. I belch 100% more. I have never belched so much. I could be a belching world champion. If there was a pregnant girl Olympics, I would undoubtedly win the gold medal in belching. I have always been a gassy person. The Morrisons are a flatulent family indeed, but this is simply ridiculous. Interestingly, my tooting has significantly decreased as my belching increases. What else? Blue veins are appearing on my breasts, which have grown but not noticeably to anyone other than myself and maybe Casey if he checks me out while standing at a 46 degree angle in the sunlight and when the crow crows twice. My heartburn last month was far more worse than it is this month, but its still there. I have yet to vomit and am only occasionally nauseated (but geez when it does hit, it really sucks). My gastrointenstinal issues mainly come in the form of nasty heartburn, severe bloat and belching. I do get very tired at random times throughout the day. I used to have severe problems falling asleep in the evenings, now I sleep like a baby, or shall I say with a baby, which is now officially a fetus and no longer an embryo.

Other pregnancy effects include moood swings. My mood swings are no longer as intense as they were several weeks ago, when before I knew I was knocked up I just I thought I was having the worst PMS in my life or worse I was just going crazy and needed a prescription for Prozac. It's funny-ha-ha now but at the time I was seriously making an appointment with my gynecologist so she could give me a referral to a psychiatrist. My world was crumbling from the inside out and there wasn't enough exercise or nutritional changes that could help. It was time to consider some serious drugs. You can imagine my initial sigh of relief when I learned I wasn't crazy at all, only pregnant. Woohoo! Then 72 hours later the "Oh Shit!" kicked in.
Welcome to the world of unplanned pregnancy. Yes, yes it's all blessings and angels and storks and tiny cute things but it's also a lot of "holy crap, I am so not the right person to be doing this and this is so not the right time for this to be happening."

Despite the decrease in crazy I still suffer from mood swings nonetheless and often find myself not necessarily unexcited but perhaps indifferent? Detachment maybe? I often find that other people in my life are far more excited about this than I am and they often squeal when they are in my presence or offer me LOADS of unsolicited advice. I love the ones that insist a healthy pregnancy means sitting around all day eating "whatever you want." That lifestyle isn't healthy when you aren't pregnant, how can it all of a sudden become healthy when you are pregnant? (Come on folks, use your noggins) This is my philosophy, my pregnancy and therefore my pregnancy lifestyle. I figure I have even more incentive to curb my bad habits and continue on a path of healthy, natural and organic living. I am still exercising regularly but more moderately, less jogging, more swimming, lots of stretching, etc. I keep an eye on my core body temp and my heart rate.

I sometimes believe my indifference may be a sign of depression (something I feel I have always been susceptible to), which according to my pregnancy books is normal so I don't beat myself up about it too bad. I also put my emotional shortcomings aside long enough to make sure I am taking care of myself and the tiny life brewing inside me. That's gotta count for something.

As far as eating habits go, I am even more conscious and aware of my choices...and cravings...and aversions. Baby Morrison apparently is taking after her father in the broccoli area, she doesn't like it. Mommy Morrison loves broccoli so this has been an adjustment. This experience has given me a glimpse into my dining room four or five years from now when I am creatively trying to incorporate tiny trees into my daughter's diet. Maybe I can bribe her with skittles...it works with my niece.

Baby Morrison also loves Chinese food (mostly she just wants the steamed rice and egg rolls), strawberry ice cream, cheeseburgers, chocolate chip cookies and ALL THE FRUIT I CAN POSSIBLY EAT. I wouldn't be surprised if I was growing a banana in my belly. Banana-soy milk smoothies? Hook me up to an i.v.

We of course have already had a conversation about cheeseburgers, surely we can find healthier alternatives to incorporate more iron and protein in our diet. I told her we can indulge in cheeseburgers once, maybe twice a month. It will be a special treat we really enjoy and can appreciate. In return she gets to have organic, grass-fed beef steaks, or well-done salmon, with steamed veggies and/or steamed rice. Or her other favorite, a simple grilled cheese sandwich with a small glass of organic tomato juice. Yum. We're already honing our negotiating skills. She says, "Mommy, feed me a cheeseburger please." I say, "We had a cheeseburger last week and I am not getting into the habit of clogging my arteries now. You know our family's history of heart disease, I'm not going to do it." She says, "OK fine. How about grill cheese and a banana smoothie tonight but you defrost the steaks for tomorrow?" I say, "Deal. That's very sensible of you." She says, "Thank you, I learned from you (she's kissing up while in utero so she has some brownie points stored upon her arrival)."

See? I'm not a bad mother. Ok. All this blogging has made me hungry.

Funny side note: the week after I found out I was pregnant we started the Cell Reproduction chapter in Biology. I was reading about meiosis while it was actually happening inside my uterus. How crazy is that?? Talk about timely.

Bienvenido Autumn

Today is the first official day of Autumn. I am so excited. I can't wait for the leaves to start changing colors and the air to turn brisk. The changing of the seasons is definitely one of my favorite things and something I am thankful for. Happy Autumn Bloggers!

Peanut Gallery...sort of

How's this for "Refocusing on Biology"? I am conducting my own experiment. I wonder if this counts as extra credit.

Yes, it's what you think it is. I swallowed a peanut and it landed in my uterus.

No, this was not planned. Yes, we are freaking out. D-day is May 7. We're not out of the woods yet in terms of being at risk for miscarriage, but we're hoping for the best and making the necessary lifestyle changes to ensure healthy development. Say a prayer that we get through the next 6 weeks or so with flying colors.

There's a Celebrity in our family!!

So yesterday when I was driving home and listening to NPR the show "All Things Considered" came on. What a surprise to listen as they did a feature on Ozark bluegrass music and the town of Mountain View, AR. They even interviewed my husband's uncle, the patriarch of our family. For our recent TN wedding celebration Glen played his bag pipes for us. Preserving family heritage and culture is very important to him. He traveled all the way to Scotland, found the original Morrison tartan, had a kilt made with the tartan, bought a set of bag pipes and learned how to play them. This is all in addition to his pickin' and fiddlin' in Arkansas. Where he still lives on the original property that the Morrisons homesteaded generations ago.

You can listen to the broadcast and see pictures here. We were in Mountain View last October for the 25th Annual Bluegrass and Bean Festival. It was also the first time I met that side of Casey's family, we were still only engaged. Good times and good memories.

Things I have learned about myself in the last six months

1. I am really turned off by a show of materialism in others. I would call this being superficial, but for those people they are their possessions, they truly value these "things" and have a deep desire to publicize their acquisitions and trophies. They are not doing this superficially, they are being themselves. Modesty goes a long way I guess. I'm definitely not one to harp about modesty, not the girl who used to model nude for college art classes.

2. I like my space. I do not like to share my space for long amounts of time.

3. My tolerance for stress is much lower than I thought it was.

4. My tolerance for remodeling is much lower than I thought it was. I am still anti urban sprawl and new construction (unless it's done responsibly). And I still really dislike the whole concept of a suburb. Next time I will buy a an older home, with all its original charm and quality craftsmanship that has already been "fixed up" or modernized by someone else. I just want to move my crap in and be done with it. Maybe paint a few walls, hang my kimono and call it home.

5. I am very blessed to have found a special someone who puts up with my crazy antics and loves me regardless.

Revision

So I put in my two week notice yesterday. I didn't actually quit cold turkey. Figured there was no reason to burn a perfectly good bridge. They asked me if I wanted to stay on the books and work maybe one night a month -- I choose the day. Sounds reasonable, we'll see how it goes.

Casey and I never did get our honeymoon blog up and running but I did manage to create a shared photo site for our recent family reunion. On that sight there is a photo album with some of the pics from the Tetons along with other events.

You can check it out here. I am hoping this new site will inspire his side of the family to add pictures and keep in touch. I really like the program.

Back in the swing of things

Hello bloggers. I apologize for not posting lately. As usual the Morrisons are very busy this summer. The good news is we made it back in one piece from Grand Teton National Park. It was a great honeymoon. We already have our next three visits planned! There was so much to see and do. We experienced a fraction of what that place has to offer. I highly recommend it. There is something for the whole family, from city slicker car camping facilities to the wilderness of the backcountry. Other activities include: paragliding, hot air ballooning, caving, moutaineering, swimming, kayaking, fishing, etc. Additionally there are several historical dude ranches (I would like to visit a dude ranch one day *grin*). For the kiddies, the ranger station offer a "junior ranger" program. Overall I think we covered about 32 miles of trail. The park has more than 250 miles of trail. Truly beautiful place. Fun times. We have tons of pictures but no time to organize them and post! We decided we will make a seperate blog with pics and stories so that Casey can pass the link along to his friends and coworkers. I posted a few pics on my Facebook account. Here is one of them:

This is Casey and I after setting up our tent at our first backcountry campsite. It felt SO GOOD to take our hiking boots off and slip on our flip flops. This was a relatively short day, we hiked about 4 miles up to an elevation of 9,000 ft., we started at approximately 6,500 ft. So as you can imagine, 99.9% of that 4 miles was very vertical. It was a good warm-up day. Thank goodness for trekking poles.

In other VERY exciting news....we have a new toilet AND we finished laying the tile yesterday morning. YIPPEE!! How exciting is that?? I didn't think we were going to get a new toilet but in the end we decided we might as well. The tile looks AWESOME. We still need to lay the grout. I am going to tackle that this week while Casey is away in Canada. All the drywall is also up. The next phase will be tiling the shower/bathtub area. We are going to hire Casey's brother to build our shevles. It is so nice to be married to such a handyman. Even better that both he, his brother and his father are all really good with wood and building furniture. The Morrison Men rock! Though I must give credit where credit is due. My father is also a very skilled handyman and mechanically inclined. It was only natural I would look for the same characteristics in my husband. As frustrating and slow as this home DIY renovation process can be, in the end, it is really rewarding to see some of these projects come to life. It also helps one appreciate good craftsmanship all the more.

We still have a long way to go. After the bathroom is finished our next project will be regrading the property around our house so the basement stops flooding, which means completely ripping out what is left of my original front yard garden :( It is fair to say that most of mine and Casey's landscaping efforts from last summer and fall have been compromised during this summer's projects. Everyone told us to save the landscaping for last but for me that was the fun part and I wanted to get started right away. Hopefully by next spring we can return our attention to our outdoor projects, including painting the front of the house and adding some shutters and window boxes. So. Many. Ideas.

I go back to school on August 20. I am super duper excited to start school.

Well, I suppose that's it out here in the hills. Casey and I are preparing for our family reunion and a visit from my sister and her family next month. Hope all is well.

Adventures in home renovation and the grand opening of HOSTEL MORRISON

Wow. Where to begin? Lots going on (nothing new there). Casey successfully replaced all the galvanized piping in our home. During the process our water main broke. Up goes a third of flower bed and much of Casey's new grass, in goes the Grand Canyon. Luckily we had help from my brother-in-law, who you see in some of the pictures, and some of our neighbors. (Thanks neighbors!) Tyler, my bro-in-law, is in between graduating college and starting the peace corps.Pretty cool.

So, back to the house. Upon finishing the piping, replacing the water main and filling in the Grand Canyon, we began bathroom demolition. Down came the walls, out went the vanity and behold evidence of what used to be a window. We were planning on building a window into our new bathroom. What a wonderful surprise the bathroom gods left us. Thank you bathroom gods. Apparently one of the previous owners didn't think much of natural light and walled up not one, but two large windows. One in the kitchen and one in the bathroom.

We also tore down our one linen closet (older homes are notorious for very little closet space)and plan on building some corner shelves instead, to add space. As much as I would love a new toilet, we are going to settle for just replacing the seat and lid until later down the road. We did find some great tile for a fraction of the regular retail price at a local salvage company. The floor and shower walls will all be tiled.

I do have pictures of our adventure but for some reason Blogger is not letting me upload them. Something about an internal error. Check back later, hopefully I'll get it figured out.

As the Smoky Mtn. representatives of the Great Nation of Texas, Casey and I have been recruiting. Our two friends, Ben and Kari, are due to arrive later this week. They essentially have embarked on the same journey Casey and I started a little over a year and a half ago. Can you believe its almost been two years already??? It feels great to be able to pass on the good karma of offering our home while two young people get on their feet and stake their claim out here in the hills. We suspect they will be with us for a several months. Crowded, yes, but love grows in tiny spaces.

Another new addition to the rustic HOSTEL MORRISON is Layla. The 11-month half boxer half lab female puppy we are fostering for someone who is moving to Florida and can't take her baby with her. We are diligently searching for a permenant home for sweet Layla. Hopefully we can find something in the coming weeks.

Honeymoon planning and reservations are almost complete. We lack a few pieces of gear, which we will purchase from our local outdoor store (SHOP LOCAL WHEN YOU CAN FOLKS!), and we will buy our food the week of. We have even already purchased our Nikon D60. It should be arriving any day. Very excited about the new cam. The first night we are staying in a hostel and the last night, at the end of a four-day backcountry trek, we will stay in a Teton Village resort/hotel, where we will indulge ourselves with running water and a king size bed.

So that's that.

Forever Young?

So I was listening to a little Bob Dylan on the way to work this morning. I do love me some Bob.

Anywho, while listening to "Forever Young" I found myself gently pushing down a swell of unexpected emotion, and thinking to myself how frustrated I can be with Time -- for being so shallow, stingy and uncompromising. I mean, seriously, how hard can it be? A few more hours to the day? A few more months to the year? A few more years to select moments of my youth?

And then of course I thought myself silly for getting so emotional so early in the morning. I figure it must be that time when my hormones start to go all wacky.

All in a day's work and other updates

Splash diluted hydrochloric acid on my arm while transporting "empty" drum to different location. Got to use the emergency wash system in one of the labs in order to wash off acid. Visit dairy farm for the first time ever in my life. Visit the very same animal research center where they cloned a herd of Jersey cows.

This weekend: 15.5 mile hike up and around Mt. Le Cont, in preparation for the the Teton Crest Trail in July.

Signed formal letter of acceptance for new job. New employee orientation is next Monday. Finally got to tell my boss at the restaurant I need to reduce my hours and availability in order to accomodate new and improved job. As Ag Istitute employee, which includes the Vet School I may be eligible for employee discounts at the clinic there, for my kidimals. Score. Further research needed.

Bought a new tempurpedic bed and moved old bed to once defunct guest room. Started planning tentative visit from sister and her fam later this summer. Am now able to offer a guest room.

Ordered some really cool space-oriented gifts for my nephews 8th birthday this weekend. I hope he has fun with my parents and possibly his Aunt Courtney and Uncle Tom. Miss you guys, wish we were there too!
