Gavin's Christmas Program at school. His class performed the Legend of the Poinsetta and sang Feliz Navidad. The little boy with the mohawk is one of Gavin's BFFs at school. I have gotten to know several of the children and parents from Gavin's classroom and we love them all. It took some time to get used to our new school when we moved here almost exactly one year ago, but we have settled in nicely and really appreciate our montessori community.
Visiting Santa at McKinney Falls State Park was our favorite event. This was on the Friday before Christmas, the last day of Gavin's school and the beginning of my 4-day weekend and Christmas break. Hooray! I packed us a sandwich supper, we took the dogs, drank hot cocoa and wassil, and listened to the park rangers talk about the wildlife and stars. Most importantly this was Gavin's first real Santa visit. He's visited Santa before, but he was a baby. This was the first year he talked about visiting Santa and what he would tell him. His excitement was palpable and by the time we got there he was so happy and shy. Despite his nervousness being in front of his first real celebrity he mustered up the courage and told Santa he wants a football helmet for Christmas. I prompted, "Gavin, can you tell Santa what kind of football helmet you want?" Gavin replied, "A Longhorn football helmet." Santa told us he thought that was a reasonable request and thinks it shouldn't be a problem finding one of those. Gavin walked away in awe and relieved that he had a chance to let Santa know what he has been wishing for. The proceeds from this event went to the maintenance of the park. Best $5 I've spent all year. I did not take too many photos. Casey was working late this evening and between Gavin and our two dogs my hands were quite full! The Santa portrait (not pictured) will be part of our annual Christmas decor. I've been on the hunt for the perfect Christmas frame.
Post-Apocalypse (12/22/12) Party with the Woods. Not your usual Christmas party, and thank goodness for that! It was fun to bring in a new era with our friends. The kids played, the adults were merry, and there was a bonfire. Hooray for the end of the Mayan calendar. We feasted on steak, shrimp, potatoes, and home brew. Towards the end of the bash the children made their way to a bedroom for Christmas Classics. Cora is the youngest of the bunch, but one would never know if you saw how she kept these two boys in line. This is her shooshing us while holding her baby doll. We look forward to more playdates with Cora.
Christmas Eve was so much fun. Gavin and I had the morning to ourselves, while Daddy worked. We made a Christmas card for Santa, drank hot cocoa, and relaxed in the living room. I prepped food for our Christmas dinner. It was a great day. When Daddy made it home he joined the fun. The boys took the dogs for a walk and when they returned home we made cookies for Santa. Nana Cathy called in from Tennessee to read Gavin two Christmas bedtime stories. It was a special time and we are grateful to have been able to share our Christmas with our far-a-way loved ones. And then when we could keep our peepers open no longer, we all settled in for a "long winter's nap."
Christmas Morning. This was the first year that Gavin has really anticipated Santa and looked forward to Christmas Day. Again, we dialed up Nana and Papa on Skype and they were able to participate in Christmas morning too. We enjoyed playing with Gavin's new loot. Later in the day our other Nana and Papa in San Antonio, along with cousin Colton, came up for Christmas dinner. We had grilled leg of lamb, sausage, green bean bacon bundles, roasted potatoes, and chocolate-pecan pie. Everything was terrific. My mom stayed behind for two days to spend special time with her two grandsons while Casey and I went back to work.
A few days later we packed up and headed to West Texas to remember our Mimi and visit more family. Pics coming soon. Our hearts are full and we're ready to usher in another year. Merry Christmas from the Morrisons.
