Gavin and I recently started an art history project. It was his idea after I can home with a library book about Pablo Picassos artwork. My intention was to show Gavin an example of abstract art, so that he wouldn't be so unforgiving of his own artwork.
We flipped through the pages. Picasso's Weeping Woman portrait caught Gavin's eye. He asked why she looks the way she looks. I explained that the bold colors and weird shapes are the artist's interpretation, that she is supposed to look that way. Then we continued to flip through the pages. With his attention span on its last leg, he suggested (on another day) that we choose one of Picasso's pictures and try to paint it ourselves - together.
I thought this was a great idea. Four days later, on a rainy afternoon, I suggested we start his Picasso project. He agreed. I asked him to flip through the pages until he found a painting that he liked.
Again he stopped at the Weeping Woman. "This one, mama." After reading the painting's history, which I quizzed him on later, we began our project. I suspect we'll work on this throughout the week, before it's complete. But here's where we are at. I painted the black outline and Gavin is working on the color, with and without my guidance.
