Back in January I had a goal of publishing more posts than I did in 2015, but then my dad died. I didn't even feel compelled to write a post about his death and my mourning or anything related to this awful thing that happened to my family. Unlike when my brother Clay died and the words just poured out.
I've stuck mostly to posting on my Instagram feed and publishing our family snapshots using Chatbooks. After my dad died I wanted to make more of an effort to get our family pics off my devices and into print.
Looking at my Blog I see I have basically the entire summer to get caught up on. I completely missed June and now we are approaching the end of July. We didn't have any family trips planned this summer, but we've made the most of it with visits to other Texas cities to visit family and weekend field trips. We've had play dates with friends, lots of swim time, camping at Enchanted Rock, a swim day in Fredricksburg, lots of skatepark time and lots of library time. In June we spent a week in Dallas, with my Uncle Rudy's family. Gavin got along great with my cousins' kids. It brought back many memories of summers spent with my cousins, whether we were having sleepovers at my grandmother's house, or in Laredo or Corpus Christi. It was therapeutic to reconnect with the and give Gavin and Sawyer an opportunity to build new relationships within our extended family.
I did something completely out of character and participated in a Crossfit competition. OMG. It was one of the most physically challenging events I've ever experienced. I hope to continue my Crossfit journey and combine it with my running.
Casey's birthday was earlier this month. We enjoyed a family-and-friends swim day at Blue Hole in Georgetown. I baked a cherry pie and Italian lemon creme cake. Both were delicious. Casey and I had our annual river date. We kayaked 5 hours on the Upper Gaudalupe with our friends and checked out a cool pizzeria and speakeasy in San Marcos. Gavin started his Book Buddy program at the library.
Last week and earlier this week we were in San Antonio getting some quality time in with my mom. It was nice spending so much time in my childhood home too. I could feel my dad's presence and in many ways it felt like I was visiting him too. My family doesn't have a gravesite to visit, so being at my parents' house is where I can pay my respects so to speak. The boys watched movies and made memories with their Nana Kathy. There was swimming and ice cream. Gavin and Casey had a special day together at Fiesta Texas. Gavin and I went to see a movie while Nana and our friend Lyndal took Sawyer swimming. I managed to meet up with not one, but TWO friends from college. It was a good visit.
Both my boys completed their summer reading program through our local public library. They're still reading and earning raffle tickets for some of the bigger prizes. They are eligible to earn raffle tickets only after completing the first 10 hours of summer reading. Gavin has been putting most of his raffle tickets into the iFly jar. He's put a few into the Cinemark movie passes jar as well. As for Sawyer, I put his raffle tickets into the Target gift card jar. I've been participating in the Adult Reading Challenge. I haven't done as well as I had hoped, but I've read a few books and got a few raffle tickets in the Alamo Drafthouse jar.
The summer is whizzing by at light speed. Next up on our list is a quick trip to Houston/Galveston. After spending a day at the beach, I'll leave Gavin with the Luceks for a week of summer camp and more quality cousin time. This will be his first time to spend a whole week away from us! I'm sure he will do great. We are especially excited for when he returns because we are getting Bristol at the same time. This is the third year of having Bristol for a week during the summer.
After Bristol leaves we'll have one week left of summer vacation and then it's Back To School!
