The pain started a few weeks ago. With the marathon less than two months away, I can't really just stop running or training, but I also don't want to injure myself. I've chilled out on the long runs and am trying to avoid up hill running, but considering the geogrpahy around here, that's difficult. I am going to try some OTC pain meds and some new hip stretches, but if it doesn't improve I guess I'll have to make a visit to my doctor. Anyhow, would love to know if any other runners have had this issue.
Response/Tips from my running readers:
Heidi, RN and running extraordinaire, recommends the foam roller.

I had never heard of one of these before. Looks like it feels really good. Gonna look into it.

Hey Tiff! What makes you think it's bursitis? Is is possible it is IT BAND tightness? Where does it hurt? How often? During activity or rest? Does rest help? have you been icing? If you don't have a foam roller DEFINITLY get one and work out that IT band. Maybe that will help?
No I have not been icing, but will try. I did some additional stretching this afternoon before my short run. Seemed to help a lot, though started giving me trouble again toward the end of my run. Before it hurt the entire run. It mostly hurts during activity, especially when climbing stairs or moving up hill. It hurts after I get up from sitting. Sometimes there is a dull ache when at rest, but not consistently.
With the stretching helping me today I am thinking perhaps it is just band tightness? What the heck is a "foam roller?"
ps..It's acute pain that hurts at my bursa. Yesterday it hurt all day long, especially when walking up stairs. I walk alot during my work day, several miles at least (MWF)back and forth from my office to class, which is 1.5 miles one way and then of course in and out of research labs all over the Ag campus. I do my lunchtime runs on TR.
ouch! i was gonna say a foam roller too. i've never had hip problems, just foot and ankle. i know you don't want to with your marathon coming up but i'd definitely scale back and take it easy. hope it gets better soon!!!
EEEEK! That sounds brutal. I hope you're on the mend soon lady!
