Munch on this!

Do you know what this is?

It's a sweet pea blossom. It's edible and taste like a tender sweet pea. Throw these babies along with the tender lil' shoots that are likely on the same stem onto a salad and enjoy! Last year I fell in love with the squash blossom. This year it's all about the pea. Turns out most flowering fruit plants have edible blossoms and they usually taste like the fruit itself. Cool huh?

For our market garden the sweet pea blossoms were actually an unintended byproduct of our cover crop (clover, winter peas, and rye). Once we began planting the post-till pea and rye becomes a nuisance. We pull them out just like any weed. The peas were already blossoming by this time so instead of wasting the tasty little treats we bagged them up and sold them for $4/#.

I took home a bag of blossoms and managed to get my toddler to eat a few before he realized he was eating something mostly green and remembered he doesn't like green food. Remember how I boasted about all the vegetables my baby ate? Well God is chuckling now. Gavin is going through a picky phase. Let's just say we always have a tupperware container of mac-n-cheese in our fridge just in case we can't get him to eat whatever we're eating. Fortunately he still loves his fruit. He'll eat veggies when their well hidden inside a dish, but he won't touch a side of green stuff.
